The guard's role

A guard's role in an emergency is set by the employer or client and should be documented (emergency plan, post orders) before the guard starts on site. Typical tasks: raise the alarm, call emergency services, guide responders, assist evacuation and crowd control, give first aid, and protect the scene.

Fire prevention on patrol

Look for and report:

  • flammables or explosives stored near ignition sources;
  • blocked corridors, exits and the floor area on both sides of exit doors;
  • fire doors propped open;
  • damaged or missing extinguishers, sprinklers or hoses; inoperative alarm panels;
  • overloaded outlets, heat-producing equipment left on, smoking in prohibited areas.
