Most of Canada Licence Prep is free, and it will stay that way. Every one of the nine licence tests has a free diagnostic, a free full mock exam in the real format, and free quick practice, all with explanations. Our PCOC boating practice is free from end to end. Pro is for people who want more: more full-length mocks to sit, drills on the topics they keep missing, and every study note.

This page explains exactly what you get for free, what Pro adds, how billing and access work, and when paying for Pro is not worth it. Canada Licence Prep is an independent study aid; we are not affiliated with the RCMP, any provincial ministry, Transport Canada or any course provider.

What the free tier gives you

The free tier is meant to be genuinely useful, not a teaser. With it you can:

What Pro adds

Pro is one plan that covers all nine tests on the site:

  • Mocks 2 to 10 for every test. Each one is a full-length, timed paper weighted by topic like the official syllabus. Sitting several different papers is the best way to know you are ready rather than just familiar with one set of questions.
  • Practice by topic. Drill one section until you get it right every time, such as PAL storage and transport or Ontario legal authorities.
  • Every study note. Plain-English notes for every topic, with sources and the date we last checked them.
  • Over 11,000 original questions, each with an explanation of why the right answer is right and why every wrong option is wrong, and a citation to the law or manual section it comes from.
  • A readiness score by topic, so you can see when you are consistently above the pass mark in every section, not just overall.

Pro plans and prices

All prices are in Canadian dollars. Every plan includes the same Pro features for all nine tests.

Plan Price Works out to Best for
Cram week CA$7.99 per week About $1.14 a day Your test is a few days away and you want every mock now
Monthly CA$12.99 per month About $0.43 a day The usual choice: two to four weeks of steady study before your course or test
3 months CA$24.99 per 3 months About $0.28 a day More than one licence, such as PAL and RPAL, or security and hunting

All three plans renew automatically at the end of each period until you cancel. You can cancel anytime, and cancelling stops the next renewal without cutting off the time you have already paid for.

Key fact: One Pro plan covers all nine tests. If you are taking the PAL and hunter education together, or the CFSC and CRFSC back to back, you pay once.

How billing works

Payments are processed by Stripe, a large payment company that handles card payments for businesses around the world. We never see or store your full card number.

Secure checkout

When you choose a plan, you go to Stripe's secure checkout page. You can pay with a credit or debit card, and with Apple Pay or Google Pay where your device and browser support them. Prices are shown in Canadian dollars. Any tax that applies where you live, such as GST or HST, is shown at checkout before you confirm, so the amount you see is the amount you pay.

Receipts

Stripe emails a receipt to the address you used at checkout after each payment, including each renewal. Keep these if you need them for your records.

Renewals

Each plan renews at the end of its period: weekly, monthly or every three months. The renewal is charged to the same card. If you only need Pro for one test, set a reminder to cancel after your exam, or cancel right after subscribing; you will still keep access until the end of the period you paid for.

How access works

There are no passwords. After you pay, Pro is linked to the email address you used at checkout. To use Pro on another device, or after clearing your browser, go to the sign-in page and enter that same email address. We send you a one-time link. Open it and your access is restored. If a link has expired, request a new one.

Use the same email you paid with. If you sign in with a different address, the site will not find your subscription.

Cancelling

You can cancel at any time from your account page, which opens Stripe's customer portal. Cancelling stops future renewals. Your access lasts until the end of the period you have already paid for, even after you cancel, so there is no reason to wait until the last day.

Updating your card or changing plans

The same customer portal, reached from your account, lets you update your card, see past invoices and switch between plans.

If a renewal payment fails

If your card is declined at renewal, Stripe retries the payment and your account page shows a notice asking you to update your card. You keep Pro access for a short grace period of a few days. If the payment still has not gone through after that, Pro access stops. You can subscribe again at any time, and your free features never stop working.

Pro vs the cost of failing

Pro is not expensive, but it is still money, so it is fair to compare it with what failing a licence exam costs. These are the official figures we have checked, as of October 2026.

Exam What a fail costs Source
Ontario security guard test You pay the test fee again: about $40 to $75 per attempt including HST, depending on source (the booking site and the older ministry study guide differ), plus another wait for a test slot ontario.ca
BC BST assessment $64.14 per attempt, and only two attempts; after two fails you retake BST Theory at $343.77 plus fees JIBC
CFSC or CRFSC (PAL/RPAL) Retest rules are set provincially; commonly one retest, then the full course again (about $210 for the CFSC in Ontario) RCMP safety courses
Alberta hunter education $25 for an online final exam rewrite AHEIA
BC CORE $30 per written attempt and $30 per practical attempt, on a different day BCWF

The money is only part of it. A failed test can mean taking another day off work, waiting for a new slot, or delaying a job offer that depends on your licence. For security candidates in particular, the date you get licensed is often the date you start earning.

Seen that way, a week of Pro at CA$7.99 costs less than paying the Ontario test fee a second time, and a month costs a small fraction of retaking a course. That said, Pro does not guarantee a pass. There is no pass guarantee on this site and no "pass or your money back" offer. What Pro gives you is more practice in the real format, and more chances to find your weak spots before the examiner does.

Exam tip: Use the free mock first. If you already score well above the pass mark on mock 1, you may not need Pro at all. If you score near or below it, more full papers and topic drills are where Pro earns its price.

Choosing a plan by timeline

The right plan depends mostly on how far away your test is and how many licences you are working on.

  • Test in under a week. The Cram week plan gives you every mock and every topic drill right away. A realistic goal is one full mock a day plus topic drills on whatever that mock showed you got wrong. Cancel straight after subscribing if you only want the one week; access continues to the end of it.
  • Course or test in two to four weeks. Monthly fits most people. Take the diagnostic, spend the first week or two on your weak topics, then sit a new mock every few days and track whether your score is moving up in every section.
  • Two licences, or a long lead time. Three months is the best value per day. It suits people taking the CFSC and CRFSC, a new hunter doing the PAL and hunter education, or a security candidate who wants to practise for a second province.

Whichever plan you choose, the free tier stays available underneath it. If you cancel, you go back to the free diagnostic, mock 1 and quick practice for every test, plus everything for PCOC.

Key fact: You never need more than one plan at a time. Pro covers all nine tests, so switching from PAL study to hunter education study costs nothing extra.

Who should not pay for Pro

We would rather you spend nothing than spend money you do not need to. Do not buy Pro if:

  • You are taking the PCOC. Everything for boating is already free, including all ten mocks and every topic drill.
  • You already score 90% or more on the free diagnostic and mock 1. You are likely ready. Review the explanations for anything you missed and book your test.
  • You want the real exam questions. No legitimate practice site has them, including ours. Our questions are original, written from the official curricula and laws. If a site claims to sell the actual test, be careful.
  • You need hands-on practice for the PAL practical or BC CORE practical. No website can teach safe handling. That comes from your instructor and the course.
  • Your test is tomorrow and you have not studied. A day of cramming rarely works for an exam with an 80% pass mark. Use the free material tonight, and if you are not ready, consider rebooking rather than buying.
  • Money is tight. The free tier is enough for many people, especially with the free exam guides, the printable questions and your course manual.

How to decide

  1. Take the free diagnostic for your test.
  2. Sit the free full mock 1 under the timer.
  3. If you pass comfortably, stay on the free tier.
  4. If you are close to the pass mark or below it, choose the plan that fits your timeline: the week plan if your test is days away, monthly for a normal study period, or three months if you are taking more than one licence.
  5. Cancel from your account as soon as you have passed. Access continues to the end of the paid period.

For details on each exam before you decide, see our hubs for firearms, security guard, hunter education and boating.

Frequently asked questions

+Does Pro cover all nine tests or just one?

One Pro plan covers all nine tests on the site: PAL, RPAL, the Ontario, BC and Alberta security exams, the Ontario, Alberta and BC hunter education exams, and PCOC. That is useful if you are taking more than one, such as the PAL and hunter education together.

+Do the plans renew automatically?

Yes. All three plans renew at the end of each period until you cancel. You can cancel at any time from your account page, and you keep access until the end of the period you have already paid for.

+How do I sign in after I pay?

Go to the sign-in page and enter the same email address you used at checkout. We email you a one-time link; open it and your Pro access is restored. There is no password.

+What happens if my card is declined at renewal?

Stripe retries the payment and your account page shows a notice asking you to update your card. You keep access for a short grace period. If the payment still fails after that, Pro access stops until you subscribe again.

+Are prices in Canadian dollars?

Yes. All prices are in Canadian dollars. Any sales tax that applies, such as GST or HST, is shown at checkout before you pay.

+Do you offer a pass guarantee?

No. Practice tests help you prepare, but your result depends on your study, your course and the exam itself. We prefer to be honest about that rather than promise something we cannot control.

+Is my payment information safe?

Payments are handled by Stripe, a widely used payment processor. Your card details go to Stripe's secure checkout and are never stored on our servers.

+Can I switch plans?

Yes. Open the billing portal from your account page to change plans, update your card or cancel. Changes are handled by Stripe and take effect according to the plan you choose.
