The law and the regulator
Security work in British Columbia is regulated by the Security Services Act (SBC 2007, c.30) and the Security Services Regulation (B.C. Reg. 207/2008). Licences are issued by the Registrar through the Security Programs Division of the Ministry of Public Safety and Solicitor General. The Justice Institute of British Columbia (JIBC) delivers and invigilates Basic Security Training (BST) on the Registrar's behalf.
Key fact: An individual must not do any kind of security work - or hold themselves out as available for it - without a security worker licence for that kind of work.
Who needs a licence
Security work covers guarding and patrolling, armoured car services, body guards, private investigation, security consulting, locksmithing and security alarm work. Each kind of work has its own licence category; this course and exam cover the security guard category.
