Prevention first: plan your trip
- Leave a trip plan with someone reliable: where you are going, who is with you, your vehicle, and when you will return.
- Check the weather, sunset time and the regulations for the area.
- Know your physical limits; hunting big game in rough country is hard work.
- Carry a map and compass (and a GPS or phone as a back-up - batteries fail and phones may have no signal).
Clothing
Dress in layers: a moisture-wicking base layer, an insulating middle layer (wool or synthetic fleece) and a wind/waterproof outer layer. Avoid cotton - it holds moisture and loses insulation when wet. Wear a hat (much heat is lost from the head), gloves and good boots. Wear blaze/hunter orange for visibility.
